Bayer, Baytown - Database Developer, TRACK System DBA
February 2002 to March 2007
Design, Develop, and Support various database applications.  Duties include DBA support for the TRACK time management system used at the Baytown site.  This includes writing inbound and outbound interfaces between TRACK and Bayer’s SAP system.  Also responsible for testing and installing upgrades and fixes to the TRACK System.  Other systems developed include: Plateau custom reports web site, SLA (Service Level Agreement) Reporting System, the Bayer Approved Vendor database, reports for the KPI (Key Performance Indicators) system, enhancements to the existing OEE (Operational Equipment Effectiveness) system, support and administration of the Baytown I.S. Development group’s development server and other applications.  Tools used include SQL Server, Oracle, MS Access, Excel (VBA and ADO), MS Visual Studio .NET 2003, and Crystal Reports among others.

Chevron Products Companyvarious database projects
January 2002 to February 2002
Modified an existing, 8-year old Microsoft Access database, replacing cumbersome screen by screen interface with more streamlined, tab-based navigational design.  Enhancements to this application also included integrating a third-party CAD / document viewer (AutoVue) to permit users to access and then view AutoCAD and other engineering drawings and documents from within the application.  This was accomplished through the use of OLE Automation.  Also created a new Access application to track Chevron's reimbursement claims submitted to the TNRCC in connection with their management of underground petrochemical storage tanks.  This application involved importing existing data from Microsoft Excel spreadsheets using OLE Automation and ADO.

Enron Energy Services - Data Viewer
November 2001
Enron’s geographically remote project engineers needed to view current data from a large and sophisticated SQL Server database located in Houston, Texas.  These users were connected to the Enron through low-bandwidth connections via the Internet.  Because of bandwidth limitations, they had been provided access to their data through a web interface, but they were unsatisfied with the limitations and sluggishness of the web browser’s thin client and limited filtering / sorting / and data manipulation characteristics.  I solved this problem by using Microsoft Access 2000 and ADO / OLE DB technology through the new connectionless Access Data Project feature.  By creating stored procedures and views on the SQL server to retrieve data, and Access forms with VBA code on the client, produced an efficient, attractive, and highly flexible application to solve these user’s business problem.  The resulting client application was less than 300 KB in size, yet capable of returning thousands of rows of filtered and sorted data in just seconds over 128 KB connections located several states away.  Total development time was 2 weeks.

Enron Energy Services - Energy Projects “Curves” Generator
April 2001 to October 2001
Working contract for Enron Energy Services, developed a “curve generator” using Microsoft Access and Microsoft Excel.  The curve generator is a user-friendly, menu-driven interface to the Actuarial Database (see below), which allows non-programmers to create and generate sophisticated SQL queries by making choices through drop-down combo- and list-boxes.  The curve generator creates the SQL code needed to perform the query and submits the query to the back-end MS SQL Server database.  Results of the query are then programmatically output to an MS Excel Spreadsheet, through COM automation.  The Excel spreadsheet then continues the processing, producing Histograms and other Chart data for presentation to Enron’s Risk Managers.

IBM (on Enron engagement) - Energy Savings Projects Valuation Tool
June 2001 to July 2001
Working contract for IBM on the Enron engagement, created a sophisticated Excel spreadsheet, using extensive VBA programming to automate the valuation of Energy Savings Projects using various inputs and energy project curve data.  This push-button, automated spreadsheet reduced the time spent by Enron’s Risk Managers to value projects by a factor of 10, while greatly increasing the reliability and consistency of the results.

IBM (on Enron engagement) - Actuarial Database
February 2001 to March 2001
Working contract for IBM on the Enron engagement, developed a database to import a variety of data from Excel spreadsheets.  The application utilizes Microsoft Access for the front-end and SQL Server 7.0 for the back-end.  Communication to the back-end is accomplished through ODBC linked tables, DAO, and SQL pass-through queries.  Data is imported and input from a variety of sources – other SQL Server databases, various Excel spreadsheets, and user input.  This database captures engineering-related data from energy savings projects and is used as an “actuarial” database for determining probabilities of outcomes for similar projects.   It utilizes over 60 tables and 1,200 fields.

IBM (on Enron engagement) - Portfolio Management Tool (3-tiered)
November 2000 to February 2001
Developed an Excel/SQL-Server/Web-based analysis and reporting tool while working on a contract basis for IBM at Enron Energy Services.  The Portfolio Management Tool is an Excel Add-in that is programmed in Visual Basic for Applications.  It utilizes Microsoft Automation, including DAO / ODBC-Direct to retrieve data from SQL Server 7.0 and Microsoft Access databases.  Enron’s Asset Investment Managers use this tool to evaluate the viability of high-dollar energy savings projects, based upon performance ratios and graphs built into the tool.  Updating to the databases, through multi-level security is accomplished by communicating information from Excel to the SQL Server database, through an existing Intranet / ASP-based web site, using dynamic queries built from the VBA code in the Excel spreadsheet.  Middle-tier database access COM components were written in Visual Basic.

Computer Techniques, Inc. - Commercial Web Site Development
July 2000 to October 2000
Developed initial phases of a commercial Internet web site for an independent attorney / CPA.  The web site will provide continuing education courses to attorneys, accountants, financial planners, and others via the Internet.  The site was developed in Microsoft FrontPage and Microsoft InterDev, utilizing HTML 4.0, VBScript, Active Server Pages, and a SQL / Access database backend.  The site utilizes a proprietary shopping cart, which I modified to implement the special requirements of this site’s products (i.e. – the site delivers online pages for a fee, rather than shipping physical goods).

Automated Spreadsheets and  Database Reporting System
January 2000 to June 2000
In meeting new Federal EPA regulations, the NOx Reduction system was created to collect data about NOx emitting devices throughout the company.  On this project, I served as the primary developer in creating a VBA / Excel Macro-driven system of spreadsheets used by various engineers throughout Equistar Chemicals and Lyondell.  The spreadsheets are designed with form-driven input screens which create data spreadsheets from pre-designed templates and stores them in a central repository with an automated document index.  To collect the data from the data spreadsheets and to facilitate reporting and consolidated analysis of the data, I also developed a Microsoft Access database that imports the spreadsheets using OLE Automation.  Menu driven, with flexible import routines, pre-programmed queries and reporting, this database captures over 200 data points for each NOx emitting device.

Lyondell Petrochemical Company - Capital Projects Database
December 1999 to June 2000
Using Microsoft Access, I designed and developed a multi-user database with multi-level security used by Equistar Chemicals and Lyondell to record monthly forecast and budget updates from field engineers and project controllers.  The Capital Projects Management Database was built with a flexible data import function that allows the database user to import data pertaining to projects, plans, forecast updates, and actual monthly results from Microsoft Excel spreadsheets (since not all users in the field have Microsoft Access installed).  Monthly results are exported from SAP into Excel and then brought into the Capital Projects database for comparison to forecasts.  Fully menu driven with pre-programmed, filter-driven reports and export to MS Excel and MS Word.  Includes graphing functions.
